Ms. Mele’s Language Arts Class
Reading – In reading we are finishing up short stories and will be starting our next unit of nonfiction. We have been reading many interesting stories as well as learning and reviewing many reading skills. We are going to start incorporating timed reading assessments, just for practice, into our class. This will help the students with their reading comprehension skills and see what areas we still need to work on.
Writing – We finished up writing our how-to articles as well as took a writing skills test. Students did very well giving detailed descriptions on how-to complete a specific task. Next we will begin working on persuasive writing. I have a few fun and interactive activities planned to engage the students and allow them to try to persuade each other on certain topics.
Grammar – Within our grammar series my classes have completed the pronoun section and are currently working on verbs. We are almost done with the verbs section as well and will be moving onto verbals very soon. With practicing our sentence diagramming every day I can see much improvement. The students seem to enjoy trying to diagram the sentences as well as share it on the board.
Catholic Schools Week – We had so much fun this year during Catholic Schools Week. As the homeroom teacher for 8W we really worked as a family to complete our coat of arms. The students got very involved in helping to choose what was going to go onto our coat of arms as well as volunteering during morning and lunch time to create it. I was very proud of them and thought they did a great job!
